The last push and the first cry,
A new beginning with a mothers sigh.
I stood nervous, scared and awed in surprise,
While looking into those tiny eyes.
Ten fingers and ten toes,
I tried to put on them baby clothes.
A sharp cry and a dreamy smile,
After all the pain a baby is worthwhile.
Early morning assessments and documentation,
Knowledge from research and its application.
Comfort measures and health teaching,
My role as a student nurse is far reaching.
A bundle wrapped with joy and hope,
For a future set out of scope.
These little lives are a miracle indeed,
I hope they all grow up to succeed.
